Sense and Sensibilities; The English

Musical styles naturally reflect regional and national differences in dance, art music and folk song. We begin our English program with George Frideric Handel, who becomes an English citizen and scores innovative English opera, oratoria and ceremonial music for the Royal Court. His Fireworks Music, written to accompany a treaty signing fireworks celebration, captures the grandeur of the English court itself. Edward Elgar inherits and refines this capacity for setting that grandeur to music.  Elgar’s Cockaigne Overture; a vision of London in both its greatness and its excess. We’ll sample a movement from Frank Bridge from his Suite for Strings. As an accomplished violist, his writing for strings is wonderfully defined and characteristic. We’ll hear from George Butterworth and Ralph Vaughan Williams; two good friends and fellow collectors of British folk songs. Butterworth’s “Banks of Green Willow” sensually evokes the English appreciation of the peaceful pastoral and of the impact on our spirit that natural beauty can have. Vaughan Williams “Norfolk Rhapsody” demonstrates the ultimate mastery of England’s most beloved and well-known composer. We’ll end the program with music that compels us to reflect, as we are joined by the choral forces of Christ Church under the direction of Lorna Barker. Together we’ll perform selected movements from contemporary composer John Rutter; his “Requiem”.

As part of the East Cooper Concert Series, the concert is on Thursday evening, March 10th at 7 pm, and tickets are $15.
